“Brush painting is an unforgiving practice. There is no hiding mistakes and no planning. The brush stroke records discipline, time, and intent.” - the Bourbon Monk

After decades working in tattooing, I found that the oldest foundations of tattoo imagery began as master brush paintings — koi, cherry blossoms, dragons, peonies, and countless other traditional motifs. Tattooing naturally led me to brush painting as a training. Both demand patience, concentration, and respect for tradition. Brush painting remains one of tattooing’s oldest roots.

Money quietly corrupts, so this work is intentionally aimless. Not careless, but rooted in the freedom from the need to be. This practice exists as a counterbalance to “desire” the root of all human suffering.

For that reason, most of this work is not created for sale. The practice is meant to remain honest and undirected.

The training continues. - Brian Foster
